Margaret Said:

I want to study law, but have been out of the legal field for 2 years.?

We Answered:

I assume you're either in the UK or in Canada (or in one of the nations in which the UK was sovereign over at some point in its history [because of the use of the word 'solicitor']). Before you start taking ANY online courses, you need to check the jurisdiction in which you intend to practice law to find out its requirements and then determine whether any of these online courses meet the requirements and are authorized (either under the Canadian Bar Association or the Law Society in the UK)...for most jurisdictions, I believe that online courses are not acceptable (unless you go to an unaccredited school that is still authorized in your jurisdiction to provide degrees and then you are still allowed to take the bar examination).

Except for California - and a few other states in the US - which allow correspondence school and/or study in a law office / judge's chambers - I do not know of any jurisdiction which will allow online classes in the study of law...

My friend who's a law major wants to move to Japan and study to be a lawyer there?

We Answered:

Your friend is going to face several major obstacles.

The most daunting is that Japan limits the number of candidates that are allowed to take the National Legal Examination. This is their way of controlling the number of lawyers in practice so they don't end up with large numbers of lawyers who files huge numbers of lawsuits just to make money like in the US.

Your friend must also have a degree from the an accredited law school in Japan AND that means your friend at the very least must be able to pass the entrance exam to law school which requires more than just the average level of fluency to read and write.

Assuming he gets accepted, there is the immigration law. Unlike Europe and especially unlike the US, Japan has some of the most rigid and toughest laws on immigration. And unlike the US, the Japan are draconian about enforcement of those laws.

My recommendation to your friend is to get a law degree outside of Japan with a specialization in international law, then get a job with a multi-national company that has a branch in Japan.

Julian Said:

Is is possible to study A level law at home without signing up to an expensive open leaning course?

We Answered:

There's no coursework involved with AS Law, and i'm not too sure but i don't think there's any with A2 either.
I don't know if you can sign yourself up so that you can take the exams but once you have actually done that then i'm sure you could just learn at home.
I think it's the same for everybody; but one our exams law exams is taken in January.

Btw, here's a really useful book if your going to go ahead:
