Graduate Studies Film

Greg Said:

B.A. in film complete. Graduate studies in physics?

We Answered:

The other poster is correct. You can study physics at many MS programs with an unrelated bachelors degree, but you must have taken the equivalent coursework. That means you must, in general, have the equivalent of a 30-hour major in physics including intermediate level courses in mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermal physics, quantum mechanics, and mathematics through differential equations. At some schools, if you have somewhat less than all that, you can be admitted with "deficiency", and you'd have to take those classes at the university before you could move on to the MS work.

The types of classes you need now aren't usually offered by most continuing ed departments, so the easiest way for you to prepare for grad school and get these courses done would be for you to actually enroll for a second bachelors degree at a local, quality university. You wouldn't start at year one again - a lot of your old coursework would count, and you'd really just be doing the classes in your major, and the math. I'd estimate it could take you 18 months to complete, maybe. But then you'd graduate with a full second bachelors degree, a BS in physics, and be fully prepared to enter grad school in that field.

If you'd like, you could start with the math this summer, via continuing ed. Many schools do offer fairly advanced math via continuing ed. It's the upper division sciences that tend to be lacking. But at least this would get you started. And you could begin researching second bachelors degree possibilities.

This would be *far* from professional suicide. This is entirely possible, and if you did things like internships while in your masters program, you could do really well coming out. You've only been out of school for a year. You're not off track at all, nor are you too old. This could work.

For your masters, I could see you somehow combining your love of physics and of film, in your research.

Explore this idea. See where it takes you.

Graduate Program in Film Studies in Korea?

We Answered:

I would go to a university that ranks high in global rankings and surveys. Seoul National University was ranked 51 worldwide in 2007 by the THES - QS World University Rankings.

I have an interest in screenwriting. Would it be more worthwhile to major in Film Studies, or English?

We Answered:

I would say Film Studies, because you already seem to have a good grasp of how to communicate what you are saying and how you feel. : ) I believe you would be good at writing scripts.
As a parent I am proud of you and glad to see you so dedicated to your studies , I pray that it takes you far in your life .
God Bless you Ethan.

Which of these schools has the best graduate film program?

We Answered:

I attended RIT for my undergrad in film, and worked with a lot of the grad students during my time there. I'm afraid I can't speak to the grad programs at other schools, but I can tell you a bit about my RIT experience, if it helps you.

The great thing about RIT's film program (both grad and undergrad) is how hands-on it is. You literally do have a camera in your hand the first day, and you are constantly making movies.

The downsides? A) RIT is on the "quarter system," so strange break times and demanding schedules can cause a lot of havoc for us film students. It's very stressful! B) The faculty can be a little hit or miss. There are some professors that I love dearly and are extremely helpful, and there are others that don't listen and cause a lot of problems. But that's probably true of nearly every school, I suppose. C) The weather. Don't plan on filming a lot of pretty outdoor shots - Rochester is the second cloudiest area in the country.
