Math Refresher Course

Zachary Said:

What should I use as a refresher before I take a college Calculus I course?

We Answered:

It's not a refresher, but I used "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Calculus" when I was taking calc. It was really helpful to me because it focuses on how to actually do questions.

For calc, you really only need algebra and some trigonometry as your background.

Dennis Said:

Question about college math course?

We Answered:

You are referring to "Remedial Mathematics"

Jean Said:

Should I stick with this non-transferable community college course?

We Answered:

If you're not getting anything out of it and you're learning it on your own, go ahead and stop going. Sounds like a waste of time. I'm sorry to hear it was a waste of time, but I also know that remedial math courses are often taught by people without graduate work in math - as a PhD student in physics, I couldn't teach college math but I could teach college remedial math, and I don't feel like I could teach it very well. Sounds like you got a non-math-major.

Refresher math course for adult going back to school?

We Answered:

There is an online program that I use with my students that may be helpful. Check out www.k12.aleks.com You have to buy a license which is usually $30-$40, but it is well worth the money. They do have a free trial to see if you like it before purchasing. Good luck!

I haven't taken a math class in over three years. Can I jump back in and take Calculus 1?

We Answered:

It honestly depends on how many Calculus classes you have to take for your degree.
Calculus I is mostly Algebra II, with a hint of pre-calc and trig, you have to have a fair knowledge of the trig identities, the graphs of the trig functions, and should be able to do all math without a calculator as most universities don't allow calulators on exams. You should know LOG, LN, and concepts of Infinity as they will be covered in calc I. I personally tested out of Pre-Calc and Trig in college and actually never took either one in high school and I got an A- in Calc I.
Calc II you should probably take a refresher course, as Calc II is the hardest of the series. You should have a good knowledge of the hyperbolic trig functions, inverse trig functions, and everything from Calc I.
Should you need to calc III, you should take a refresher course and pay extremely close attention to vectors, three-dimensional functions, and probably take a physics course or have basic physics concepts known because physics is covered extensively, as well as the LOG, LN, and infinity concepts.

Raymond Said:

What type of math am I to expect for a first year college student?

We Answered:

When you enroll at college you will take placement tests in math and english. Based on your test scores your academic adviser will advise on what math class to enroll in.

Constance Said:

does any one have a quick source for math n algebra refresher course?

We Answered:

There are a lot of practice problems with answers here:

Choose a state, and grade level (algebra is usually covered somewhere between 7th and 10th grades). Follow the topics one-by-one. You can choose to either read through the lesson or just solve the problems (which come with answers and generally explanations). Best part, it's free!

Good luck!
