Kindergarten lessons to teach colors?

We Answered:

Study one color for the day. All activities utilize that color: Examples: (red) put out the red crayons/ red paint/ red playdoh, etc. for art... Have students use red pencils for writing/ doing any written work...Read the story about the little red hen...Act out how the color red makes you feel...etc.

Math and Science in a Friendship Thematic Unit?

We Answered:

For math - maybe sharing? I realize that fractions are a bit much for that age group, but they can probably grasp the idea of two people sharing equal halves of something.

As far as science goes, maybe you could talk about the ways science has made it easier for people to keep in touch with their friends. Cell phones, email, planes - all the results of science.

unit lesson plan using math and reading for kindergarten?

We Answered:

I am a Kindergarten teacher and I can tell you some of the things that they need to know in kindergarten to be successful. As far as a specific book, there are so many choices that it would be hard to say use this particular book. In kindergarten one of the most important things they learn in math is reading and writing their numbers (in CA it is 1-30). We also focus on patterns, AB, ABB, ABA...the names of shapes and solid shapes and to describe them (ex. a circle is a circle because it is round and flat)...name the days of the week in order...tell time to the hour...add and subtract numbers 1-10...and many more.

Brad Said:

Where can I find free lessons or guides on teaching and preparing my son for kindergarten?

We Answered:

FYI - You should learn to trust educators more. That kind of paranoia will rub off on your child eventually and he wont be able to take teachers seriously. Then he will really have a behavior issue in class.

Some books that might interest you:

"What your Kindergartener Needs to Know" E.D. Hirsch
"What your First Grader Needs to Know" E.D. Hirsch

They cover all subjects for each grade level.

Here are some websites for supplies.

PS - For everyone of those sad stories you described above about teachers there are thousands of inspirational ones. If you only look for the negative then thats all you'll see.
