What's the best way to prepare for the math portion of the GRE?

We Answered:

When I took the GRE, I hadn't had a math class in over 3 years. So, even though I had been good in my math classes, I had been extremely rusty on even basic concepts.

My suggestion:
Look through all the usually math topics they present on the test. If there are concepts you've never heard off (say you never took calculus and don't know what a derivative is), then you should start there. Teach yourself the basics, and try a few problems out.
Then, the concepts you are familiar with, but haven't practiced in awhile, look back at notes from classes you've had previously (that is, if you've kept them, I know I did). Make sure you understand the things you may have forgotten. Do a few practice problems on these as well.
And, on problems you are Absolutely sure that you know, try a problem or too anyways, just to make sure. Sometimes you may think you remember all the "steps" to solving problem, but then will realize you forgot a step or two.

Lastly, sometimes the GRE has "tricky" formats to the questions they ask. If you have any type of study guide that provides you with test taking tips for the types of questions you may encounter, that will definitly help out. That's because, some of the questions aren't multiple choice and have you type out your answer.

Also, the biggest obsticle to the GRE math section is that it's TIMED. So, most times, you will not be able to solve the entire math problem by hand, it would be too time-consuming. You want to try to recognize underlying patterns, that will be "short cuts" to solving the problem quicker.

But honestly, the best way to study for math is to just do TONS of problems. The more you do, the more you're familiar with concepts, and the quicker you'll be able to recognize patterns, getting problems done quicker.

Good luck. And don't worry too much. If your verbal is higher than your math, in some "weird" way, it's like they even out, at least with the combined score. Most people always have lower scores on math, so you wouldn't be the only one. Still, best of luck to you.

What math should I review for the GRE???

We Answered:

GRE General Test requires the school level mathematics covering numbers and arithmetic, basic algebra, graphs, set theory, inequalities, 2-D geometry, mensuration and data interpretation. Algebra, as a subject itself is not required but the application of its principles may be required for problem solving. Calculus is absolutely not required.
