As far as shifting to software development, you sure can - but not into application development. More on the lines of infrastructure software - like server management, identity management, network s/w etc.

I worked for a large companys internal IT support (both phone support and going to their desks) its okay, but you meet what can best be described as arrogant idiots needing your help who think their problem is more important than anyone elses yet havent thought to see if their machine is plugged in. Its frustrating sometimes but has its benefits (stolen pc components) As per qualifications, i had a degree in Computer Science at the time but i dont think youd need a degree tbh. Neither of those i see as careers of dedicated computer "enthuisiast" but are a good stepping stone to a better job. Day-to-day stuff for what i did, taking idiots calls, fixings idiots computers that kinda crap. I now run a small contract It company that does network installation to house calls to web servers to everything in between and rake in a nice £65,000 a year while not having to pay council tax on a house etc as its also a company office and i have a company car, company phone, company dog etc.....

Before you go asking for a Rx of Valium (Diazepam) I think you should do a little reading on the subject. Valium is classified as a benzodiazepine. Benzodiazepines are highly addictive and usually create a bigger mess than what you started with.
